Currently a Staff Soloist at Cape Town Opera, Siphamandla Yakupa obtained her BA degree in Opera studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and her Postgraduate Diploma in Opera at the University of Cape Town. She represented South Africa at the Choir Olympics in Germany in 2004.
While studying at UCT she performed the role of Saartjie Baartman in the premiere of Five: 20 Operas made in South Africa, and Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress.
Roles for Cape Town Opera include: Nella in Gianni Schicchi, Sister Genoviefa in Suor Angelica, Frasquita in Carmen, Musetta in La bohème, and Marzelline in Fidelio.
In 2014 Ms. Yakupa performed the role of Winnie in Cape Town Opera’s Mandela Trilogy at the Deutsches Theatre in Munich.
In 2016 she toured with Mandela Trilogy to Italy, Ireland and the United Kingdom and in the same year performed as Clara in Porgy and Bess in Barcelona, Madrid and Argentina and Jula in African Prophetess in Sweden.
Ms. Yakupa was a finalist in the 2016 International Hans Gabor Belvedere singing competition and performed as a soloist at the Duet Gala in 2015 at the Artscape Opera House.
