Outreach and Education
CTO Outreach and Education: Outreach
Through its Outreach and Education Programme, Cape Town Opera is committed to:
- Bringing performances to a wide range of South Africans beyond the Cape Metropole, instilling love and appreciation for opera and classical music and building new audiences for the art form.
- Providing meaningful arts education for young people who will be the performers and audience members of tomorrow.
- Using musical theatre as a tool for social and historical education.
- Increasing access to Cape Town Opera performances.
Outreach and Education activities for 2012 will include:
The Music of Freedom
March 2012
An introductory tour of the Castle of Good Hope for secondary school learners will provide a historical context for CTO’s staging of Beethoven’s Fidelio at this heritage site.
West Coast Choral Engagement Project
March – August 2012
Young singers and instrumentalists from towns on the West Coast will receive top-class professional training and mentoring over a six month period through a series of workshops, attendance at CTO productions in Cape Town and performance opportunities with CTO musicians.
National Tour
March – April 2012
Once again, CTO will undertake a three week national tour of South Africa, providing focused training for learners and educators preparing to compete with demanding operatic repertoire at the South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod. For the first time this year, a touring production for adults will be added to the tour: Leonard Bernstein’s entertaining one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti, starring Violina Anguelov as Dinah.
New works in Nyanga
June – August 2012
CTO will partner with Nyanga-based music theatre group Siyaya to create a new educational work, conceived to tackle pressing social issues in nearby communities.
Mandela Trilogy in Wales
June 2012
To celebrate the European premiere of Mandela Trilogy and build on previous educational collaborations with the Wales Millennium Centre, CTO will share insights into Madiba’s life and the struggle against apartheid with young people in Wales.
Langa Music Development Project
October 2012 – March 2013
Location: Guga S’thebe Cultural Centre
The purpose of this music initiative in Langa is to provide access to music training and promote the development of children and young people throughout the area, especially after school.
