Friends of Cape Town Opera

Friends of Cape Town Opera

Throughout the season, the Friends of Cape Town Opera presents behind-the-scenes glimpses into the world of opera through a series of informal and formal events hosted at several venues in Cape Town.

Annual Membership fees are R150 per member.

This entitles you to receive our regular emails and bi-monthly newsletters about forthcoming opera productions. You also receive information to the many events we hold that are not usually open to the general public eg. Lectures, master classes, opera dinners in the winelands, breakfast concerts and DVD cocktail evenings to name a few of the events we have held.

As a “Friend” you are the first to book for all opera productions at a discounted price. One evening during every opera, you are invited to join us for complimentary drinks and snacks at first interval or before the performance if there is no interval.

More importantly, by you becoming a member of “Friends of Cape Town Opera” you play a vital role in helping to keep opera alive in Cape Town.

We, the Friends of Cape Town Opera, have one specific goal – to ensure that this magical art form continues, not only to survive, but to thrive and flourish! Amongst our student body we have some outstanding voices and we are determined that these young people be given the opportunity right here in Cape Town to share their gift of vocal talent with us.

History of the Friends of Cape Town Opera

The Society of Friends of Cape Town Opera (previously known as Friends of the Nico Malan Opera) was formed in 1976 on the lines of similar institutions overseas to encourage a closer bond between opera and its lovers. Our aim is to promote and stimulate interest in the art of opera and singing and to support it financially.

The Friends then gave bursaries or grants to selected students. Organizing the wonderful Awards evening where Awards were presented to best Artist and best supporting Artist also a Backstage Award was given. This evening was later combined with the Fred Dahlberg Bursary Fund. The aim of this Fund was to send one Artist overseas for a specific study and the Friends contributed towards this.
