Johan Botha Gala Concert Cape Town
Johan Botha Gala Concert

“Johan Botha sang … like a man possessed. His gradations of tone-colour, his effortlessly controlled soft singing and his heroic outbursts of ecstasy … held the audience enthralled” Opera
South Africa’s most famous vocal export, dramatic tenor Johan Botha is one of the world’s most sought-after singers, appearing regularly at the world’s great opera houses, including La scala, Covent Garden, the Berlin Staatsoper, the Metropolitan Opera, the Liceu and the Vienna Staatsoper. With the greatest conductors of our day, including Abbado, Levine, Bychkov and Pappano, he has thrilled audiences around the globe with his masterly performances of the heavier Italian repertory, as well as the great Wagner and Strauss tenor roles.
Cape Town Opera was advised yesterday that Ms Deborah Voigt will not be coming to sing in the Gala concert, due to ill health. We have been most fortunate in securing South African-born Ms Amanda Echalaz to sing with Mr Johan Botha and she will be arriving in Cape Town tomorrow. Ms Echalaz recently performed in Cape Town Opera’s Madama Butterfly in the Opera house at Artscape to great acclaim.

Conducted by Sebastian Lang-Lessing, last heard in Cape Town in CTO’s Der Rosenkavalier in 2010, this gala concert offers a rare opportunity to hear two international opera superstars live in the Mother City.
The Johan Botha Gala Concert for one night only on 28 August 2011 at the Artscape Opera House at 18h00
