The Voice of the Nation Opera Studio is an intensive training programme designed to support the artistic development of ten young, talented singers drawn from across South Africa. These singers are at the outset of launching professional singing careers, and their involvement with Cape Town Opera and the University of Cape Town allows them performance opportunities and experience with an internationally renowned opera company, as well as training with foremost vocal coaches, conductors and directors.
The singers benefit from individual coaching in all opera disciplines, including musical styles and interpretation, vocal training, languages and diction, acting and stage technique. They are expected to understudy principal roles and to sing comprimario roles for any Cape Town Opera production. Additionally, they gain valuable experience in public performance by singing at concerts (public and private) and with school tours throughout the Western Cape. The singers work with visiting singers, conductors, directors and other opera professionals, with Cape Town Opera staff and with the dedicated head coach, Ean Smit. They have the opportunity to observe every phase of the rehearsal and production of operas staged by Cape Town Opera. Each singer is furthermore paid a bursary by Cape Town Opera, to offset the costs of their instruction, coaching, housing and travel.
Our Voice of the Nation Opera Studio singers are the ideal ambassadors for South African artistic talent. They are young, vibrant, extremely talented, and more importantly passionate about opera. They are both the present face and future talent of opera in South Africa and Cape Town Opera is proud to help them develop their craft and to provide them with the best possible training and opportunities. This dynamic group of singers proves that now, more than ever, opera has a place in South Africa.
