CTO DESIGN ASSISTANT OFF TO THE BAYREUTH FESTIVAL

Christiaan Harris, CTO’s Design Assistant funded by the Western Cape Government’s EPWP program, will be visiting the Bayreuth Festival in Germany for two months from 28 May to work as an intern in the festival wardrobe for the production Lohengrin. ‘In addition to this internship, I have been approached by the University of Bayreuth’s Department of Theatre Studies to present a lecture at the seminar “Performing cultural memory: on Concepts of the body and the cultural memory” where I will presenting a paper on Cape Town Opera’s Der Fliegende Holländer directed by Matthew Wild and its exploration of cultural memory and colonialism. I will also be presenting my own thesis on Johan Engels’s designs for Tristan und Isolde (1985) to the undergraduate students. I hope to learn more about the design and wardrobe departments as well as archiving and preservation for theatre,’, said Harris. He will also attend scenic rehearsals at the Gäertnerplatz in Munich for The Chocolate Soldier and rehearsals of Die Italierin in London
